About HomeYardMath.com
Precision material volume, weight, and retail-bag-versus-bulk cost calculators engineered for US homeowners, landscape contractors, and DIY builders.
Why We Built HomeYardMath
Every spring and summer, millions of US homeowners overpay at big-box hardware stores or under-order from local landscape supply yards because standard online calculators only output a single number: raw cubic yards.
Knowing you need 2.1 cubic yards of gravel or mulch doesn't immediately tell you whether your pickup truck bed can safely carry the weight, how many 0.5 cu ft or 2.0 cu ft bags that equals at Home Depot or Lowe's, or whether paying an $85 local dump-truck delivery fee is cheaper than buying pallets of individual bags. HomeYardMath.com bridges the gap between raw geometry and real-world hardware store purchasing decisions.
Our 3-Layer Calculation Standard
Every calculator on HomeYardMath is audited against three real-world construction variables:
1. Geometric Volume
Exact 3D volume conversion from square footage and depth inches into cubic feet (ft³) and cubic yards (yd³, where 1 yd³ = 27 ft³).
2. ASTM Bulk Density
Material-specific loose bulk density constants (e.g., 2,700 lbs/yd³ for dry pea gravel vs. 1,100 lbs/yd³ for volcanic lava rock) to calculate accurate tonnage.
3. Compaction & Grade Loss
Built-in buffer controls (5% to 15%) to account for sub-grade unevenness, plate compactor settling, and perimeter cutting waste.
